Nail, Thick

Definition:

Subjective: Nail that appears thick when viewed on end

Comments:

No objective standard for nail thickness could be identified although an unsupported claim suggests that nails are 0.5 mm in females and 0.6 mm in males (http://www.emedicine.com/orthoped/topic421.htm). There is a build up of keratin causing the nail plate to lift away from the nail bed. The thickened nail plate is usually very hard.
